An organization's greenhouse gas accounting is based on the GHG Protocol, which divides emissions into three scopes:
- Scope 1 – Direct emissions from sources the company owns or controls, for example vehicles, combustion, processes and refrigerant leakage
- Scope 2 – Indirect emissions from purchased energy the company consumes (electricity, heating, cooling)
- Scope 3 – Other indirect emissions that occur as a consequence of the business, upstream and downstream in the value chain
For most SMEs, Scope 3 accounts for the largest share of emissions.
A carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions linked to an organization, product, or activity.
Corporate reporting under the GHG Protocol expresses emissions in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e). This accounts for the fact that different greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane, warm the planet by different amounts, known as their global warming potential (GWP). As an example, 1 kg of methane warms the planet about 28 times more than 1 kg of CO₂ over 100 years, so it counts as 28 kg CO₂e. You never need to do this maths. We do it for you.

The tool guides you through identifying your most material emissions as you go. How much precision you need depends on your purpose: a first, exploratory footprint works fine with rough estimates. Some level of estimation is common for Scope 3. Use the comment feature to record your assumptions so they stay traceable.
